The Benefits of Room Darkening Window Treatments

Improved Sleep Quality

This is one of the most known is one of the best benefits of room-darkening window coverings. Studies have proven time and time again that a darkened room can help people fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. They are a perfect fit for households with shift workers who get their sleep during the day or homes with kids that may need to rest when it’s still light outside.

Ambient Noise Reduction

The thicker materials of some room-darkening shades and shutters have the additional benefit of reducing outside noise, which can also help you sleep and work better.

Additional Privacy

Because room-darkening shades block out so much light, your room will remain protected from passers-by looking in.

Increased Insulation

Because room-darkening treatments block out so much of the sun's intensity, they will help keep your home cooler in the summer.

Room-Darkening vs Blackout Window Treatments

When it comes to the world of window treatment terminology, two terms you’ll often see used are “room darkening” and “blackout” when it comes to blinds and shades. While this is all a matter of splitting hairs, there are some key differences: it all depends on how much light the shades block out. Room darkening treatments block out 95% to 99% of natural light, while blackout treatments block out almost 100% of incoming light. It can be difficult to truly create a fully blackout experience, and room darkening shades get the job done.

  • To create an even darker and more protected space, consider layering up your shades or blinds with custom drapes.

Room Darkening vs. Light Filtering Window Treatments

Most window treatments you’ll encounter are light filtering—they have different opacity levels from sheer to opaque with different levels in between, including semi-sheer and semi-opaque shades that allow in a lot of light, like solar shades or block out a lot of light, like room darkening shades.
